Stressing the Importance of Reward Based Training and Socialization
Reward based training is important for many reasons, but possibly the most important reason is the bond that is created between the human and animal. Reward based training has been proven to be the most effective way of teaching cues in order to get a desired bahvior. Don't be fooled by skeptics with no formal understanding of dog obedience that say that reward based training is simply bribing a dog with a treat. First off, it's not bribery, it's shaping. And the results achieved from reward based training, are second to none! Rewards can also be the act of moving forward during a walk when teaching loose leash walking. It can also be decreasing distance between two dogs who have to exhibit calm behavior in order to meet. As you can see, it's just not treats! Rewards can be functional.
Pair a reward based training program with the benefits of socialization in a group class environment, now you have a winning combination! Associations are being made all the time even outside of formal training sessions. So why not make things more enjoyable rather than teaching how to avoid pain?
